Spanish

At Carleton House Preparatory School, our Spanish curriculum is designed to introduce pupils to the richness of the Spanish language and culture, fostering a love for learning languages and developing essential communication skills. Aligned with the UK National Curriculum for Modern Foreign Languages for Key Stage 1 and 2, our programme supports pupils in acquiring a practical understanding of Spanish, enhancing their linguistic abilities and cultural awareness. Taught by a specialist Spanish teacher, our curriculum ensures that pupils receive expert instruction and immersive language experiences.

Key Features of Our Spanish Curriculum:

Language Skills Development: Our curriculum focuses on developing the four key language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Pupils practise these skills through a variety of activities, including role-plays, dialogues, and comprehension exercises. They are encouraged to use Spanish in meaningful contexts, helping them to communicate effectively and confidently.

Cultural Awareness:

Understanding Spanish-speaking cultures is a central component of our curriculum. Pupils explore different aspects of Spanish-speaking countries, such as customs, holidays, and everyday life. This cultural context enriches their language learning experience and helps them appreciate the diversity and richness of the Spanish-speaking world.

Specialist Teaching and Expertise:

Spanish is taught across the school by a specialist Spanish teacher, providing pupils with expert guidance and a deep understanding of the language. The specialist teacher delivers a structured and engaging curriculum, ensuring that pupils receive high-quality instruction tailored to their needs and abilities.

Interactive and Immersive Learning:

To make language learning enjoyable and effective, our curriculum incorporates interactive and immersive methods. Pupils participate in language games, songs, and cultural activities that enhance their learning experience and make Spanish come alive in the classroom.

Assessment and Personal Progress:

We assess pupils' progress in Spanish through a variety of methods, including class activities, projects, and formal assessments. Feedback is provided to support their development and help them set and achieve personal language learning goals.

Progression Through Key Stages:

Key Stage 1 (Years 1 and 2):

In the early years, pupils are introduced to basic Spanish vocabulary and phrases through interactive activities, songs, and games. They learn to recognise and use simple greetings, numbers, colours, and everyday vocabulary in context. The focus is on developing listening and speaking skills, with an emphasis on creating a fun and engaging learning environment.

Key Stage 2 (Years 3 to 6):

As pupils advance, they build on their foundational knowledge by expanding their vocabulary and grammatical understanding. They engage in more complex conversations, learn to write simple sentences and paragraphs, and develop reading comprehension skills. Pupils explore various aspects of Spanish-speaking cultures, including traditions, festivals, and geography, through project work and cross-curricular activities.

At Carleton House, we are committed to inspiring a love of languages and equipping our pupils with the skills to communicate confidently in Spanish. Through a well-structured curriculum, specialist teaching, and engaging activities, we ensure that our pupils develop a strong foundation in Spanish that will benefit them throughout their lives.
