Key Stage 2 Curriculum at Carleton House Preparatory School
At Carleton House Preparatory School, Key Stage 2 encompasses Years 3 to 6 and is a pivotal stage in your child’s educational journey. In our close-knit, family-like school environment, where everyone knows each other, we provide a nurturing and supportive curriculum designed to build on earlier learning and prepare pupils for future academic success.
Curriculum Overview:
Our Key Stage 2 curriculum is aligned with the UK National Curriculum and is tailored to foster both academic excellence and personal development within our small, welcoming school community.
Curriculum Support and Preparation:
We offer a tailored curriculum that goes beyond the National Curriculum requirements, preparing pupils for selective entrance exams and the 11+ exams. Our approach ensures that students are well-prepared for entry into selective independent secondary schools.
Core Subjects:
Pupils delve into English, Mathematics, and Science with a focus on advancing their understanding and application of key concepts. In English, students enhance their reading, writing, and communication skills through engaging texts and diverse writing tasks. Mathematics lessons encourage critical thinking and problem-solving, while Science provides hands-on experiments and investigations to spark curiosity and scientific exploration.
Specialist Teaching:
Each class benefits from the expertise of a full-time teacher and a teaching assistant who support morning lessons in Maths and English. Pupils also receive specialist instruction in Computing, Physical Education (PE), Spanish, and Music, ensuring a comprehensive and varied educational experience.
Residential Trips:
From Year 3 to Year 6, pupils participate in enriching residential trips that foster independence, teamwork, and practical learning experiences. These trips are integral to our curriculum and provide opportunities for personal growth and adventure.
Extracurricular Clubs:
Pupils can join various clubs before school, during lunchtime, and after school, including Art Club, Music Club, Drama Club, and Sporting Clubs. These activities provide additional avenues for creative exploration and skill development.
House System:
Students are part of one of the four houses named after the founding families of Carleton House: Madden, Wills, Sampson, and Johnson. The house system promotes a sense of community and belonging, celebrating the rich history of Carleton House with opportunities for house-based activities and competitions across the school.
Class Assemblies and Performances:
Pupils showcase their talents and build confidence through termly class assemblies for our families and Christmas performances, contributing to our vibrant school community.
Competitive and Sporting Opportunities:
Our pupils engage in various competitions and sporting events, including athletics championships, national quiz competitions, and maths challenges. We also participate in school-based sporting competitions through the Liverpool Schools Sports Partnership (LSSP), promoting physical fitness and teamwork.
At Carleton House, we are proud of our family-like atmosphere and small school environment, where every student is known and valued. Our Key Stage 2 curriculum, combined with expert teaching, tailored preparation, enriching trips, and extensive extracurricular opportunities, ensures that each child receives the support and encouragement they need to thrive academically and personally.
